When George Lucas set out to fashion a television series about the remarkable childhood that shaped the life and career of his Indiana Jones character, he chose to set the project during a remarkable time in history: the early 1900s. This period the Belle Epoque saw the emergence of many of the ideas that shaped our modern age. Industrial revolution, political turmoil, artistic innovation, and scientific discovery during the ten years between 1908 and 1918 all contributed to the tremendous surge of progress that has taken place throughout the remainder of the 20th century. The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles provides Lucas with the ideal vehicle for bringing to life some of the most influential people and events of this significant era in history. During the series, young Indiana Jones encounters major 20th century thinkers from all walks of life including politicians, writers, artists, psychologists and philosophers. Ernest Hemingway, Franz Kafka, Ho Chi Minh, Eliot Ness, Louis Armstrong, Picasso, Sigmund Freud, George Gershwin, and even Mata Hari, all play a role in Indy's coming of age.
The talented international crew assembled to take on the series included top scriptwriters such as Carrie Fisher (script doctor, author and Star Wars classic trilogy actor), Jonathan Hales (Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones), Frank Darabont (The Shawshank Redemption), Jonathan Hensleigh (Die Hard) and Rosemary Anne Sisson (Murder, She Wrote). Some of the more notable directors asked to work the series include Terry Jones (Monty Python and the Holy Grail), Joe Johnston (Hidalgo) and Simon Wincer (Lonesome Dove), among others. Producer Rick McCallum, Directory of Photography David Tattersall and Production Designer Gavin Bocquet round out the talented crew.
Guest stars comprised of veteran actors in both film and stage such as Christopher Lee, Vanessa Redgrave and the original Indy himself Harrison Ford. The series also showcased the talents of budding stars Lukas Haas, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Elizabeth Hurley and Anne Heche.
The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles pilot debuted on ABC television in March 1992 as a two-hour movie of the week called Young Indiana Jones and the Curse of the Jackal which actually comprised of two different chapters featuring the child Indiana Jones played by Corey Carrier and later the teenager Indy played by Sean Patrick Flanery.
Following the pilot, the series continued to run as weekly hour-long episodes featuring both the child and teen Indy, until second season when Sean Patrick Flannery was cast more as the main star for the show.
After ABC cancelled the series, USA Family Channel broadcast the remaining unaired episodes plus eight episodes combined to make four TV movies for the last season in 1996.
In 1999, Lucasfilm released twelve newly-edited chapters and three TV movies on video under the new name The Complete Adventures of Young Indiana Jones. These chapters included: Chapter 6: Spring Break Adventure, Chapter 8: Trenches of Hell, Chapter 10: The Phantom Train of Doom, Chapter 11: Oganga: The Giver and Taker of Life, Chapter 12: Attack of the Hawkmen, Chapter 13: Adventures of the Secret Service, Chapter 15: Daredevils of the Desert, Chapter 16: Tales of Innocence, Chapter 17: Masks of Evil, Chapter 18: Treasure of the Peacock's Eye, Chapter 20: Mystery of the Blues and Chapter 22: Hollywood Follies.
